Not all disasters can be avoided but some simple steps can help prevent the avoidable ones. Take the time now to prepare for winter so you are ready when winter hits. Before winter settles into Utah, do these simple tasks.

• Protect pipes

A broken pipe means water damage in your home. If you have never had a frozen pipe before, it doesn’t mean you won’t ever have one. Minimize the chance of disaster by taking action before winter hits. Unhook outdoor hoses from faucets and have your sprinkler system blown out. Consider using heat tape or insulating indoor pipes to keep them warm during the winter months. Keep your thermostat high enough to prevent freezing. Most importantly, make sure you, and any other adults or older children in your home, know where the main water shut-off valve is located. If you have a pipe burst in your home, shut off the water as soon as possible to minimize the damage to your home.

• Clean rain gutters

A clogged rain gutter can send water into your home causing water damage. The roof of your home is large and can lead to large amounts of water runoff when it rains or snows, so having gutters clogged with leaves and other debris that do not allow that excess water to run down and away from your home can cause a severe problem.

• Inspect the chimney

A fire is a great way to keep warm in the cooler months, but it can be dangerous if you do not properly maintain your fireplace. Avoid a house fire by having your chimney inspected and cleaned before winter arrives. Keep furniture, other household items and especially children away from fireplaces to help prevent injuries or a house fire.

• Check interior pipes and weather stripping

Make sure the pipes inside your home, under bathroom and kitchen sinks especially, are well insulated or exposed to the warmth of your home by leaving cabinet doors open at night. Leave faucets dripping during extremely cold temperatures to keep the water flowing which can help prevent potential freezing. Check your walls, window sills and ceilings for any potential leaks. Also check the weather stripping around the doors and windows to make sure the heat is staying in and the cold is staying out,
