For homes or areas that regularly struggle with mold damage, controlling the humidity is an important factor. One major tool at your disposal here is a dehumidifier.

At AAA Restoration, our mold removal and prevention services include the professional use of dehumidifiers – but you can also use them on your own to help prevent these issues from cropping up. Here are some basics on the right times to use a dehumidifier and how to use one.

When to Use a Dehumidifier

Dehumidifiers are best used in damp, musty-smelling rooms, and for people suffering from respiratory problems like asthma or allergies. Ideally, you’ll shoot for a humidity level between 40 and 50 percent in a given room – more than this leads to mold growth, while below 30 percent can lead to structural issues.

If you live in a humid climate, the best places for a dehumidifier are the basement, bathroom and attic. If you’ve recently had flooding or water damage issues, dehumidifiers can help with drying as well.

Usage Safety

A few basic tips on safely using a dehumidifier:

  • Placement: Always keep the dehumidifier on a stable, level surface with at least 10 inches of free space behind it and five feet in front of it.
  • Plug it into a grounded outlet – don’t use extension cords, as these can be a fire hazard.
  • Space: Don’t operate the unit in a larger space than the manual recommends, and close all windows and doors in the area where you’re using it.
  • Clean and vacuum regularly in the area where the humidifier is running – dust will be absorbed and spread out into the room.
  • Turn off the unit when no one is home in case of malfunctions. Some have an auto turn-off function.
  • Empty the tank when needed to avoid spills and water damage.
  • Don’t move the dehumidifier from a cold room to a warm room too fast – this can cause condensation. Wait at least 10 minutes before turning the power back on after changing rooms.
