Preparing for Ice and Snow

preparing for ice and snow

There are a lot of things that homeowners can do to prepare their homes for the cold winter months that Utah experiences. That cold is sneaking up on us faster than we know!

The last thing someone would want is to come home from a long winter weekend to find that a pipe froze and burst. Here are some ways you can prevent this:

  1. Drain any exterior water supply lines per the manufacturers’ directions.
  2. Drain and store any exterior hoses inside. Close inside valves that supply outdoor hose bibs and then open the outside to allow water to drain, then leave it open so that any trapped water can escape without bursting the pipe.
  3. Add insulation to problem areas like attics, or unfinished basements. This will help regulate warmer temperatures surrounding pipes.
  4. Install pipe sleeves over exposed pipes.

Another problem we face in Utah is ice-damming. Excessive icicles are an indication of ice damming.   A lot of times this can be prevented by having a simple roof inspection and making sure that everything is properly sealed and there are no possible entry points anywhere on your roof. Added insulation can also help with this because it traps heat in the main area of your house instead of allowing an excess of warm air to get into your attic and warming the attic.
