How to Be Safe From Fire Hazards In the New Year

fire hazard

Make sure that you aren’t caught off guard in the new year with some of the potential fire hazards you can face in your home. After all, no one likes being injured by something as simple as a spark from the fireplace or a candle left unattended on a table. So how do you make sure you’re safe? Read on for some fire safety tips during the holidays.

Have a fire extinguisher on hand

It’s an old cliche, but it’s worth repeating: Keep a fire extinguisher in your home. Fire extinguishers can help deal with fires of all sizes, and you never know when an emergency will strike. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the extinguisher beforehand so that you know how to use it properly.

Use a thermometer

If you’ve got a fireplace or a smoker that you use, make sure to check its temperature on a regular basis. You don’t need the weather channel to tell you that most winter holidays involve a lot of parties and gatherings, and the last thing you want is for your fire to suddenly flare up at an inopportune moment. So keep a thermometer nearby to make sure the fireplace or smoker is at safe levels.

Keep holiday candles away from any flammable objects

Candles are a staple during the holidays, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t pose any fire danger. Keep them away from flammable objects and furniture, and you’ll be sure to have a safe holiday season.

Don’t leave your fire unattended

You’ll want to make sure that you’re paying attention to your fire at all times while you’re using it. Leaving the room for too long, in particular, will leave you vulnerable to a potential fire, whether it’s from a cigarette or a candle. It’s always best to err on the side of caution and make sure that you’re watching over your fire.

Of course, you should also be sure that your fire escape plan has been implemented, and that you and your family know how to get to safety in the event of a fire.

Use outdoor lights responsibly

Nothing brings the Christmas spirit quite like lights, but be careful with them. You don’t want to run the risk of your cords being tripped over or caught on something, causing a fire. Also, keep the lights away from any kindling materials, like pine needles or leaves, to avoid any potential fires that way as well. Remember, you don’t have to have a fire to have a fire hazard!

Have a Safe New Year Celebration

It bears repeating: the holidays are a great time to take a few extra precautions, like making sure that you have a fire extinguisher and a fire escape plan, so that you can relax and enjoy the holidays. If you follow these tips for fire safety during the holidays, you’ll be well on your way to having a safe holiday season.
